With the joint affiliation of the WSU-AAUP and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), members of our "AAUP-AFT" chapter can take advantage of the money-saving benefits offered by both organizations, some of which are summarized below. The AFT package of membership benefits is especially generous. Only those persons who are dues-paying members of the AAUP-AFT enjoy the benefits summarized below. OCCUPATIONAL LIABILITY INSURANCE Members automatically receive up to $1,000,000 of protection for claims arising out of the professional activities of an AAUP-AFT member. This includes legal defense, court judgments and out-of-court settlements. TRANSMEDIA DINING CARD Present this card to any of 7,000 participating restaurants in the U.S. and you will save 20% on the food and beverage portion of your bill (excluding tax and tip). Membership in Transmedia is free for AAUP-AFT members. More than 300 restaurants participate in metropolitan Detroit, including (in the immediate WSU area) Union Street, Twingos, Mr. Mike’s, Canfield’s on Woodward, the Majestic Cafe, and more. MORTGAGE FINANCING AAUP-AFT members can take advantage of competitive mortgage rates, down payments as low as 5%, and special help for first-time buyers, including lower up-front costs. These benefits are available to members, their children, and parents. UNITED BUYING SERVICE Save money on almost everything through United Buying Service. UBS has several participating retail dealers who have agreed to sell their products cheaper to UBS members than to anyone else. When you are interested in purchasing such items as cars, central heating and air conditioning, major appliances, musical instruments, financial services, etc., simply call UBS at 1-800-937-2678. After UBS verifies your membership, they’ll send you a purchase certificate within 48 hours which you present to the participating dealer. LIFE INSURANCE New members can receive $12,000 in AFT Group Term Life Insurance - at absolutely no cost to you for one full year. You qualify if you are under age 60, have not been insured under the AFT Group Term Life Insurance Plan at any previous time and are a new member of the AFT. As a member you will be shopping at a discount to begin with and then you’ll realize additional savings because you shopped the AFT PLUS online market-place. FAX Members may use the fax during regular business hours free of charge except for a modest fee for international calls. NOTARY PUBLIC AAUP-AFT Executive Director Jan Thompson is a notary public and will notarize documents for members free of charge. SUBSCRIPTIONS Members are welcome to read at the office, or borrow overnight, issues of The Chronicle of Higher Education and Black Issues in Higher Education. RETIREMENT PLANNING BOOK Members may borrow the book Retirement 101: How TIAA-CREF Members Should Deal with the Dramatic Changes in Their Pensions by Willard F. Enteman. Retirement 101 is the first and only guide written especially for academics and written specifically in response to the TIAA-CREF changes. It deals with such issues as savings allocation, investment management, estate planning, property ownership and disposition, insurance in all its varieties, early retirement and social security. LAMINATING Items 8 1/2 X 11 or smaller will be laminated free of charge in small quantities. There is a small fee charged for larger quantities. TAX GUIDE FOR TEACHERS Each year the AAUP-AFT purchases the annual Tax Guide for College Teachers which may be borrowed to assist in your tax return preparation.
